What is MSF?

MSF is the world's leading medical humanitarian charity, working principally in emergency situations. At its heart, the organisation is a collection of people around the world who share a sense of outrage at human suffering and a commitment to do something about it.

Founded in 1971, MSF has had an office in Dublin since 2006.  In 1999, MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "in recognition of the organisation's pioneering humanitarian work on several continents."

Our teams of dedicated healthcare professionals deliver medical treatment where it's most needed, when it's most needed, in over 65 countries around the world.  Often working in difficult geographical or political contexts, we go where others cannot or choose not to go.

We are able to go where the needs are greatest because we are independently financed - more than 80% of MSF's funding comes from the generosity of private individuals from Ireland and around the world.

Each year around 3,000 medical and non-medical professionals from around the world volunteer their skills and time to help save lives where a health catastrophe has struck.

Since the opening of the Irish office in 2006, over 40 Irish nurses, midwives, doctors, surgeons, accountants, and logisticians have worked around the world with MSF.

From the very beginning, MSF understood that it was not enough to simply treat our patients.  Working directly with some of the most vulnerable people in the world, we witness unimaginable and preventable suffering.

We believe it is our responsibility to speak out about this suffering, to raise awareness, confront the perpetrators, and put pressure on decision-makers who can bring about a change.
