Starting Your Society

  1. Check that there isn't already a 'Friends of MSF' Society at your university
  2. Contact the Friends of MSF liaison at the Dublin office
  3. Find at least three other group members
  4. Speak to your Student Union
  5. Consider registering as a university society
  6. Let MSF Ireland know when you have registered
  7. Personalise your Friends of MSF logo
  8. Recruit more members
You can build your member base with a stall at Fresher's week and with a sign-up sheet at your events. Also, using a mailing list and Facebook is a good way of keeping in contact with your members.
  9. Hold your first meeting
  10. Create and executive committee
You could also have class reps to help raise awareness of the society in the university.
  11. Sort out a constitution
Setting out a plan for the development of the society, with projects like the construction of a website, is a good way to start the ball rolling.
  12. Plan some key events
e.g. Fundraising, Film screening, Guest speaker, etc...
  13. Promote your group and your events online
  14. Communicate with attendees - get more people involved!
A good way of broadening the reach of a society is to build relationships with likeminded societies - medical societies or humanitarian aid societies. You can hold larger events when the workload is shared and the member base is doubled!
