Honduras
What's happening in Honduras?
Violent crime is rampant in Honduras, which has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
The Central American country’s long history of political, economic and social instability had huge medical, psychological and social consequences for its population.
Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) first worked in Honduras in 1974. Today, we treat victims of violence, including sexual violence, working with the Honduran Ministry of Health to provide emergency medical and psychological care in the capital, Tegucigalpa. We also provide healthcare to marginalised groups, including sex workers and members of the LGBTQIA community.
In 2023, began a study aiming to prevent illness and deaths from dengue fever. The innovative approach involves the release of mosquitos that carry a bacteria which reduces their ability to transmit dengue.
