FAQs

Working with MSF is not reckless. MSF maintains extensive risk-management procedures and security guidelines for every mission. Field workers are briefed on the country security situation before going to the field, and upon arriving at the project site are given specific security protocols. Adherence to our field guidelines for personal and team conduct and safety is not negotiable.

Duties in the field depend on the project and situation of the mission country. Generally doctors are involved in clinical activities, supervision, and training of national medical personnel, with some administrative duties. This is similar for other medical professions, like nurses, midwives, and other health specialists.

First-time field placements are always unaccompanied.  Most field project locations do not allow for friends and family to visit.  Accompanied posts may be offered to experienced field staff, depending on field needs and conditions.

MSF makes field placements based on need, not on the preferences of the candidate.  Candidates will be matched to projects on the basis of the suitability of their skills and experience for the role.  MSF asks candidates to be as flexible as possible about where they are placed.  The more willing you are to work in any country, the more likely you will get matched sooner.

The majority of overseas field placements are given a 9 to 12 month contract. During the first year the pay is approximately 900 Euro/month. This amount is paid into your bank account in Ireland.  MSF meets all the costs of living and accommodation in the project country, travel expenses and visas, specific vaccinations and insurance costs.
MSF workers receive 25-28 days paid holiday per year, for periods less than one year the amount is paid pro rata.

Please see our Work with Us section.

MSF has no prescribed limit, as physical condition is more important than age. As living conditions in the field can be basic, with hot and cold climate extremes, field staff must provide MSF with medical clearance from health-care provider certifying fitness to lift and carry a reasonable amount of weight, and the ability to walk distances that one might not at home.

No. Since we are a medical aid organisation and often work in emergency situations, we can only take on experienced and fully qualified medical and non-medical professionals.

The general criteria for working in the field are at least 2 years of professional experience (post-qualification) in relevant fields, availability for at least six months, current professional credentials and relevant work or travel experience in developing countries. Assets that benefit applicants are flexibility, overseas experience with other NGO’s, adaptability to basic living conditions, and foreign language skills.

We do not only take medical volunteers. While the majority of our volunteers have a medical background, we also need skilled support staff such as: Paramedical professionals (nutritionists, epidemiologists, lab technicians, mental health professionals) Logistical support staff/technical experts (water and sanitation engineers, construction engineers, logisticians with proven working knowledge of pumps and generators, vehicle mechanics, radio/communication equipment, simple water and sanitation systems, construction, basic book-keeping and supply), management staff and financial controllers.
