You get to see some different medicine, you work and live with some amazing people in some amazing cultures, you learn a lot about yourself and you give some new and exciting anaesthetics- how can that be anything but a great thing to do? -Carl Stevenson MBBS FRCA

MSF anaesthetists and surgeons often work with emergency teams to treat people wounded in conflict zones. At other times, they join teams that are providing longer-term surgical care to communities without access to functioning healthcare systems.

During conflicts and their aftermath, anaesthetists and surgeons are needed for assignments generally lasting from six weeks to three months or more.

Basic diagnostic equipment and facilities needed to run an operating room may be limited; much of the sophisticated equipment you have come to rely on may simply not be there. Your clinical skills and judgment will be all important. Anaesthetists' responsibilities include anaesthesia for general, paediatric and obstetric surgery, as well as training of local staff.
