Epidemiologist

We are regularly in need of epidemiologists for long and short term field support of our projects. Examples of roles include outbreak management, helping teams plan appropriate responses (type and location), including active case finding, vaccination or water and sanitation intervention (e.g. meningitis, measles or cholera), conducting mortality surveys, evaluation and set up of surveillance systems, and also epidemiological support in complex projects to enhance evidence based decision making.

Basic Requirements: 
  • Commitment to the aims and values of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)
  • Minimum two years of significant and relevant professional experience post-qualification
  • Demonstrated ability to work well as a part of a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience in supervising, training and managing others
  • Flexibility and ability to cope with stress
  • Willingness to work in unstable environments
  • Minimum of 3 months' relevant travel or work experience in developing countries
  • Available to work on short missions for at least 3 to 6 weeks. Ideally available to work for 3 to 12 months

MSF is always looking for people with language skills and at the moment we are particularly looking for field workers with good French.

You should meet all the basic as well as the essential requirements relevant to your profession before applying to MSF.

Essential Requirements: 
  • Must have a degree or Masters in epidemiology, or an MPH with extensive epidemiology training
  • Proven practical skills in design / implementation / evaluation of quantitative and qualitative epidemiological research methods
  • Ability to design and implement surveillance and other data collection systems for disease and outbreak monitoring, including mortality and nutritional surveys, and to train others in appropriate data collection and analysis
  • Proven practical skills with software for epidemiological database and statistical analysis (Microsoft Excel and at least one statistical program)
  • Ability to be a team leader
Desirable Requirements: 
  • Medical/biomedical background
  • Familiarity with tropical diseases / infectious diseases
  • Fluency in one of the following languages: French, Spanish, Russian or Arabic
  • Previous experience in a similar role with another non-governmental organisation (NGO)
  • Previous experience in a similar role in an unstable environment
