What's happening in India?
India has the world’s largest population and fifth largest economy.
Despite its strong economic growth, healthcare remains a challenge for millions of people in India due to a combination of poverty, social exclusion and an over-burdened public health system.
Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) started working in India in 1999 and continues to fill gaps in the health system. Our teams work with vulnerable communities, providing medical care linked to infectious diseases, mental health, sexual violence and malnutrition.
In 2021, MSF also responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has overwhelmed health facilities in India. During the second COVID-19 wave, we sent emergency teams to manage high-dependency units in Imphal and Churachandpur. We also launched a telemedicine and a mental health helpline for those diagnosed with the virus.
In Mumbai, we treat complex cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) at our clinic and support outpatient services. we continued to treat patients enrolled in the endTB clinical trial, with the aim of generating more evidence for shorter, more tolerable, injection-free treatments for multidrugresistant TB.
We also provide mental health and psychosocial support to people affected by the conflict in Jammu and Kashmir, and run mobile clinics offering basic healthcare to communities in remote areas of Chhattisgarh.
