Doctors of the Displaced: Medical Care on the Move

Dr Conor Kenny (search and rescue) and Dr Mark Sherlock (TB/HIV - Somali refugees) will speak about their experiences caring for the medical needs of displaced people; both on land and at sea.

War, poverty and oppression continues to displace millions of people around the world.

While some attempt to reach Europe by treacherous journeys, many more are displaced closer to home.

Doctor Conor Kenny worked with refugees in Greece from March to September 2016. He has also worked on the search and rescue ship the MV Aquarius on the Mediterranean Sea from February to May 2017.

"I could observe the grey rubber boat bobbing in the rough sea, full beyond capacity. People now leaning over the port side. It was deflating at a rapid rate."

Doctor Mark Sherlock has worked in one of MSF's HIV and multi-drug resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) projects in slum settlements outside of Nairobi, Kenya.

"Many leave from Mogadishu, locked in shipping containers with no food, water or ventilation and travel through Ethiopia, South Sudan and then Uganda before finally ending up in Kenya."
