Migration: "One of the most powerful moments in my entire MSF career"

Wiet Vandermael, MSF Field Coordinator Deputy, talks about the impact the search and rescue missions are having on him and the tangible relief felt by those rescued.

MSF has been operating a search and rescue operation in the Mediterranean Sea since May 2015 in direct response to the thousands of people fleeing violence, insecurity, and persecution at home.

These people attempt a treacherous journey via North Africa and across the Mediterranean to reach Europe, and countless lives are lost at sea in the process.

MSF's operations in the Mediterranean, in partnership with Migrant Offshore Aid Station, have rescued 1,817 people including 352 women and 123 children so far since operations began.
